Even though it is not required to submit this application before buying a firearm but it is good idea to know where you stand in possessing a firearm. It might take 30 to 120 days for you to get your result from the eligibility test.
Now you need to research places to buy the rifle you want. Research by asking people and by looking it up on the internet. If you find the store that you to buy your rifle from, do search on the internet if there is any positive or negative feedback about the store.
When you think you have done enough research then visit the store to look for the particular rifle you want. When you make the purchase, the cashier will need your valid photo ID and you will also be required to fill in ATF form 4473 and DROSS. The fee is $25. After that you will have wait for the mandatory 10 day waiting period before you can obtain your gun. In the 10 day period your background will be checked and verified.
During this waiting period, it will be a good thing if you get a firearm safe. You can either get a CA approved gun safe or a California-approved locking device. Remember that proof of ownership is required so make sure you keep your receipt safe.
After 10 days are over you can go pick up your rifle and you will be asked to sign the 4473 form again. You will be required to submit proof that you have a California-approved locking device or a safe. This will end your journey to purchase a rifle in California.
